A separate retinoid treatment usually goes on after cleansing, followed by moisturizer. Applying moisturizer first is another option when a retinoid feels drying. Your product’s directions and any advice from your prescriber take priority over a general layering rule.
The usual order for an evening routine
The American Academy of Dermatology places medication or treatment after cleansing, with moisturizer afterward. Applied to a separate evening retinoid, that gives a straightforward sequence: cleanse, use the treatment as directed, then moisturize. [1]
Check the instructions for the amount to apply and whether your skin should be dry. Avoid mixing the products together in your palm unless their directions specifically allow it.
When moisturizer before a retinoid may help
Applying moisturizer first is often called buffering. The AAD describes this option for a drying retinoid: moisturize after washing, then apply the retinoid 20 to 30 minutes later. That timing belongs to this particular guidance; your own treatment may specify a different approach. [2]
Ask your prescriber before changing a prescribed regimen. If a cosmetic causes persistent burning, stinging or a rash, stop it and seek advice. Additional layers cannot make an irritating product appropriate for continued use. [3]
Do you need the retinoid sandwich method?
The “sandwich” generally means moisturizer, retinoid and another layer of moisturizer. The cited AAD guidance supports a moisturizer-first option, but it does not establish that everyone needs three layers. An extra application may be unnecessary when your existing routine feels comfortable and follows the instructions.
When the retinoid is already in a cream
A retinoid cream can provide moisturizing ingredients within the same formula. Whether you want another moisturizer depends on the product, your skin and the directions for use.
EYKOH Collagen + Retinoid Cream with Mushroom contains HPR with ingredients including glycerin and jojoba oil. Follow its nighttime directions. Because it contains a retinoid, it should not be used as the plain moisturizing layer beneath another retinoid treatment.
Choosing the accompanying moisturizer
Choose a texture that feels comfortable and avoid introducing several new actives together. Fragrance-free products may suit easily irritated skin, although any cosmetic can cause a reaction. Keep broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher in your daytime routine. [4]
Avoid retinoids during pregnancy, and discuss use while trying to conceive or breastfeeding with your clinician. If you need help with the order, bring the product labels to your appointment so the advice can reflect the formulas you actually use. [5]
